My Facebook Spring Cleaning

I went through my Facebook account last week and started deleting a bunch of applications and groups that I had added and joined and that just seem to be cluttering my inbox.

A site called AppData keeps track of the fastest-growing applications on Facebook. There are 44,000 apps now. Yes, 44,000. And new gainers come onboard every day.

The day that I did my Facebook Spring Cleaning, I checked their list of the top apps and copied the top 20 that that had the most growth of the mid-range apps to see what is going on there. (There are big developers like RockYou! that have 14 apps that have more than 42 million users.)

If we read the list as an indicator of what people are doing in Facebook, what might we say?

1.         ExitReality 3D Apartment
2.         2009 Bracket Challenge
3.         Cheers!
4.         Deal or No Deal
5.         Super Mario World
6.         Jeu de Seduction
7.         Praise Party
8.         DogWorld
9.         I’d Have To Be Drunk
10.        Sei Affascinante
11.        ViP Club$
12.        Send “Willow Tree” Angels
13.        Eres Atractivo
14.        u00c7ekici Misiniz?
15.        Which mighty woman of the Bible are you most like?
16.        Tiddy Bear for Cancer
17.        Send Good Karma
18.        ??vs??
19.        80’s Memories Gifts
20.        Say Something

ExitReality 3D Apartment hit big but ominously "appears to only prompt users to visit an external website which contains a cryptic message about gathering data."  Watercooler’s 2009 Bracket Challenge is all about those college basketball fans gearing up early for the March Madness ahead. Several places on the list are for an international application called Jeu de Seduction, Eres Atractivo, ??vs??.

Do you see education crossing over with Facebook in the list? Looks like Facebookers just want to have fun.

I hope that any appearance of a good cause or charities is a positive sign.

BTW, Facebook continues to grab market share of US visits from MySpace. But don't count out MySpace - it still has a commanding lead over Facebook in terms of overall US visits to social networking sites. That is something I cannot explain or understand.
