S35 The Next Generation
As Serendipity has grown over the past 3 years, Ken and I have worked to keep it up-to-date (Ken's prodigious Wordsmithy) and updated (my software tweaks and twists). Over the Christmas break I decided to shorten my never-gets-done list and import all of Serendipity35 into a new environment more suited to beta development than our S35 production site.Long hanging around on my never-gets-done list is the production of an S35 parallel site that is compatible with screen readers for the visually impaired and available in a downloadable braille format. That project is still a while from completion, but supporting the blog on this new platform is a big step toward making the blog completely accessible.
The s9y software that hosts this site is still in an alpha stage; my hacks and tweaks probably make it more like double alpha. The plan is to make the new features robust and stable as the site moves towards a fully production state.
We're not without an exit plan. If this site doesn't perform up to its potential or, even if it does, and we find its potential was overestimated, we'll still have the original site online. There are no plans to unplug our NJIT based site, just the hopes we can take a more global approach to its improvement.
